A summer’s Artful Tour to St Ives in Cornwall UK

A summer’s Artful Tour to St Ives in Cornwall UK means a visit to the St Ives Tate and Barbara Hepworth’s home, studio and sculpture garden. Both places will fill you with delight . St Ives is a special place, sizzling with art in the summer sun. The writer Virginia Woolf spent many-a-happy childhood summer here and the house she stayed in still stands. Finding a perfectly-sized copy of ‘To the Lighthouse’ in The Tate shop, inspired me to read this writer I’d always been curious about. And then a lovely thing happened as I read it …... Firstly, the story is surely set in a thinly veiled St Ives and not Skye at all. It was published in 1927 which means Woolf must have read James Joyce’s Ulysses ( published 1922 in Paris ) and been influenced by his writing. Then there is the description in chapter 9 of Lily’s modernist painting - showing a mother and child as a ‘triangular purple shape’ with ‘no attempt at likeness’ . It’s impossible to think of a mother and child sculpture without thinking of Barbara Hepworth - who managed to have triplets and yet keep her practice as an artist going. Although she didn’t move to St Ives until 1949, where she spent the rest of her life - she is very likely to have read Virginia’s modernist novel .
